1518, Albrecht Dürer, The Virgin Praying -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)

From the museum label: Mary's devotion is directed towards Christ. He would have originally been found as a so-called Man of Sorrows on a second painted panel. Diptychs like these with the Virgin Mary and her suffering son derive from the Bohemian painting of the fourteenth century. But the luminous colouration of Mary's clothing attests to Italian influences. Dürer had studied the art of Giovanni Bellini on his travels to Venice.
