2022, Sergio Hernández, Japanese Print -- San Diego Museum of Art

From the museum label: The dense pattern of animals and fantastic creatures draws on Hernández's ties to place and the traditions around Oaxaca, as well as his Indigenous heritage. The red color that defines the figure in this work is a beetle-based pigment cultivated by pre-Hispanic cultures. In the ancient Americas, gold was linked to notions of divinity, authority, and immortality.
