1908, Gabriele Münter, Tutzing -- San Diego Museum of Art
From the museum label: Following the death of her parents in 1898, at the formative age of 21, Münter left Berlin to visit relatives in the United States, traveling through rural Missouri, Texas, and Arkansas. Although this aspect of her early adult years is rarely discussed, it may well have fueled her desire for a simpler, pre-industrialized way of life, when she moved to the small market town of Murnau am Staffelsee, near the Bavarian Alps in 1908, when Tutzing was painted.
