1570 (ca.), Veronese (Paolo Caliari), Madonna and Child with St. Elizabeth, the Infant St. John the Baptist, and St. Catherine -- Timken Museum of Art (San Diego)
From the museum label: This devotional painting by the Italian artist Paolo Caliari, better known as Veronese, depicts the Holy Family. In the center, the Virgin Mary is holding the Christ Child, who reaches out to a sumptuously attired Saint Catherine. Saint Elizabeth, the mother of Christ's cousin, Saint John the Baptist, sits on the left, rolling swaddling clothes. Mary gently turns her head toward Saint John the Baptist who is playing with Jesus's toes. The artist arranges the figures in a stately flow of interconnecting forms and renders them using a rich play of light and a perfect balance of warm and cool colors. Although he was born in Verona, as his nickname suggests, Veronese is best remembered for the grand-scale, theatrical frescoes and flattering portraits of nobility that he painted in Venice during the late 16th century.
