From the museum label: Lambros Demetrios Callimahos (1910-1977) epitomized the intersections of the arts and sciences, as a master flautist, physicist, and mathematician. Born in Greece, and living in the United States from the age of four, he studied at the Juilliard and had his musical debut in Munich in 1935, where he met Münter, and performed his own transcriptions of Bach for flute and harpsichord. He joined the US Army in 1941 as a specialist in cryptology (science of secret communications).
