1902, Camille Pissarro, Landscape with Flock of Sheep -- Norton Simon Museum (Pasadena)
From the museum label: In a vast field, under a thickly painted, lowering sky, Pissarro's shepherd gathers his flock before a storm. With its densely packed brushstrokes and huddled sheep, the picture has been interpreted as an expression of the painter's radical left-wing politics, a call for solidarity among the rural working classes. Pissarro had moved to the remote village of Éragny-sur-Epte in 1884. There he converted a barn into his studio and painted the surrounding countryside for over a decade.
