1895, Henri Fantin-Latour, The Discouraged Artist -- Getty Museum (Los Angeles)
From the museum label: Three female figures console a dejected artist. To create this composition, Fantin-Latour used lithographic crayon, scraping it away in places to modulate the effect. He drew on waxy tracing paper, from which the design could be transferred to a lithographic stone for printing, though no lithograph of this scene is known. Nevertheless, the artist's signature—twice in ink at lower right—shows that he considered the work complete.
