1862, Eugène Delacroix, The Education of Achilles (pastel) -- Getty Museum (Los Angeles)
From the museum label: Delacroix used tracing paper as a tool to help develop compositions. He made the sketch at far left in preparation for a ceiling painting. Nearly twenty years later, Delacroix used this and other drawings to create the adjacent finished pastel [this image], which he gave to his friend the novelist George Sand (French, 1804-1876).
