1848 (ca.), Honoré Daumier, The Uprising (detail) -- Phillips Collection (Washington)

From the museum label:

This dramatic painting embodies the fervor of the revolutionary spirit. Emerging out of a dense crowd, the central figure leads the charge with an outstretched arm. The work likely depicts the Parisian uprising that led to the 1848 overthrow of King Louis-Philippe's monarchy.

Daumier is often referred to as the "Michelangelo of caricature." In lithographs, also on view in the gallery, the artist lampooned the French bourgeoisie and championed the lower class. His critiques did not come without consequences, In 1832, the artist was charged with sedition for his lithograph skewering King Louis-Philippe and he served six months in prison.
