1929, Paul Klee, Tree Nursery -- Phillips Collection (Washington)

From the museum label: Tree Nursery culminates a series of more than 20 "script pictures" that build upon an inventive system of notational signs, both familiar and imaginary. Scratches and incisions painted on the surface recall hieroglyphs. Over these markings, painted horizontal bands of alternating color create a measured composition suggestive of a musical score. To express his ideas, Klee employed the circle, square, and triangle, believing that mathematical principles were at the heart of creation due to the countless possibilities of growth through multiplication, repetition, or combination.
