1330 (ca.), [Iran], Iskandar slaying a dragon (detail) [folio from the Great Mongol Shahnama] -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label: In this story, a dragon terrorizes the local countryside and blocks the passage through a mountain. When Iskandar finds out, he fills oxen carcasses with poison and feeds them to the beast. Then he and his army kill the weakened dragon with arrows. The creature, the craggy landscape, and the dark vegetation are inspired by Chinese models that llkhanid artists adopted for their work. Its wings gone, the dragon, too, has lost its ancient Near Eastern appearance and has acquired a serpent-like body.
