1868 (ca.), James McNeill Whistler, The White Symphony: Three Girls -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)
From the museum label: This composition offers the closest approximation to the work Leyland hoped would grace the Peacock Room's south wall. Whistler's The White Symphony features three women whose bodies echo one another in their elongated curves. He has arranged the figures among conservatory plants picked out in dashes of red, pink, and green. The horizontal composition and shallow depth of field suggest both inspiration from East Asia as well as a Greco-Roman frieze.
