1868 (ca.), James McNeill Whistler, Symphony in Blue and Pink -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label: Strokes of green, blue, and white and dashes of pink echo across this composition of four women on a windswept beach. Whistler described the effect to his friend, artist Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904), as "the same colouring reappearing continually here and there like the same thread in an embroidery—and so on with the others-more or less according to their importance—the whole forming in this way an harmonious pattern—Look how the Japanese understand this!—They never search for contrast, but on the contrary for repetition."
