1635 (ca.), Nicolas Poussin, Saint John Baptizing in the River Jordan -- Getty Museum (Los Angeles)

From the museum label: Born in Normandy and trained in Paris, Poussin spent most of his career in Rome. This work was created for his great patron Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657), an amateur archaeologist and supporter of classicizing artists in the city. Poussin's arrangement of figures is based on his study of ancient stone reliefs and Renaissance paintings. During the 1630s he adopted the golden light and atmospheric landscapes found in Venetian art.
