1495 (ca.), Vittore Carpaccio, Hunting on the Lagoon -- Getty Museum (Los Angeles)

From the museum label: Young noblemen shoot birds with terracotta pellets in the Venetian marshlands. This sophisticated waterscape is the upper portion of a larger panel that was cut into two parts long ago. The lower section shows two finely dressed women seated on a balcony (Museo Correr, Venice). The stem in the vase on the balustrade corresponds perfectly with the large lily in the foreground of the upper scene. The complete painting epitomizes Carpaccio's remarkable skill in perspectival construction and his keen anecdotal interest in the life of his native city.
