1904 (ca.), Edouard Vuillard, Madame Hessel at the Seashore -- Hammer Museum (Los Angeles)

From the museum label: This painting depicts Lucie Hessel, one of Vuillard's longtime friends and a frequent model in his works dating back to the early 1900s. Vuillard spent summers with the Hessels in Brittany, Normandy, and later near Versailles for many years, usually renting a separate villa for himself and his mother, with whom he lived until her death in 1928. During these summer visits, as well as during the rest of the year in Paris, Vuillard would create sketches and take photographs of his friends to use as study tools for his paintings. Over the years he also made several trips with Lucie to other parts of Europe. In March and April 1912 they went to Brussels, Munich, and Strasbourg. The full extent of their intimate friendship is not known. Vuillard did not reveal much in the journal that he kept for many years, beginning in 1888. They remained close for more than forty years, however, and when Vuillard died in 1940 in Le Baule, it was with Lucie Hessel at his side.
