1878, Gustave Moreau, King David -- Hammer Museum (Los Angeles)

From the museum label:

In this large canvas, the Old Testament figure King David is seated on his throne, looking pensively downward as an angel sits perched at his feet. The ornate orientalist architectural columns, suspended chandelier, and intarsia-bordered stage add strong vertical and horizontal elements to the composition, providing a framework for the distant landscape that lies beyond.

Together with Salomé Dancing before Herod in the Hammer collection, King David was among eleven works that Moreau submitted as entries to the Paris World's Fair of 1878. Public recognition and praise for these works rewarded the artist with recognition as a chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1875 and appointments as an officer of the legion in 1883 and a member of the institute in 1889. Ultimately Moreau succeeded to a professorship at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he became one of the most respected and influential teachers of his time. Among his most important students were Georges Rouault and Henri Matisse.
