1926, Margaret Clarke, Miserere -- National Gallery of Ireland (Dublin)

From the museum label: Margaret Clarke, a former star pupil of William Orpen at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, became in 1927 the second woman artist, after Sarah Purser (1848-1943), to be elected a full Academician of the Royal Hibernian Academy. Her outstanding skill in drawing, which she demonstrated as a student, was matched by a sophisticated and distinctive choice of subject matter, and a skilful application of colour in her mature painting. The influence of El Greco (1541-1614) is evident in this religious work, particularly in the rich colouration, dense figure groupings and emphatic gestures.
