1934, Alice Neel, Cityscape -- National Gallery of Ireland (Dublin)

From the museum label: Alice Neel lived and worked in New York where she painted portraits, still-lifes, and street-scenes. In December 1934, her partner Kenneth Doolittle (a merchant marine who suffered from opium addiction) destroyed most of her work in a jealous rage. She moved out of their Greenwich Village apartment and spent the next week in a hotel on 42nd Street. It was there that she painted this snowy cityscape. The roof of Holy Cross Church can be seen in the foreground. Touches of red indicate lights on theatre fronts, while abbreviated black stokes delineate anonymous people coming and going below. This painting marked a new beginning for Neel.
