1920 (ca.), Mary Swanzy, French River Landscape -- National Gallery of Ireland (Dublin)
From the museum label: This painting is a testament to Swanzy's enthusiastic investigation of Cubism, with which she became familiar during regular visits to Paris. Rather than attempt to represent this conventional landscape subject naturalistically, she breaks it down into constituent geometric elements, massing the natural and man-made into an integral whole. The angular modelling and muted colour range, typical of Cubism, contrast with the more fluid forms and heightened palette Swanzy favoured in later paintings. An accomplished painter and illustrator, Swanzy travelled extensively in Europe during her lifetime, and also visited America and the South Seas.
