1760, Allan Ramsay, Margaret Lindsay of Evelick, the Artist's Wife -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: In 1758 Margaret Lindsay eloped with Ramsay, marrying at Edinburgh's Canongate Kirk. Her aristocratic parents, outraged by the social inequality of this alliance, severed connections with the couple. Despite the artist's success and stature Margaret (his second wife) was snubbed in London high society. This refined and tender study of her may commemorate the birth of their daughter Charlotte in 1758. Internationally famous, it is an exquisite example of his mature style in female portraiture.
