1856, Thomas Faed, Home and the Homeless -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: Faed's highly charged composition contrasting the 'fortunate' poor (left) and the homeless (right) drew upon two well- known poems. The first, published in 1786, was often illustrated by Scottish artists: The Cotter's Saturday Night by Robert Burns (1759-1796). The second was The Excursion (1814) by William Wordsworth (1770-1850), which includes the tragic tale of Margaret abandoned by her weaver husband. Commissioned in London by the wealthy philanthropist Baroness Burdett- Coutts, this is an early example of Faed's popular genre paintings.
