1786, Benjamin West, Alexander III of Scotland Rescued from the Fury of a Stag, by the Intrepidity of Colin Fitzgerald -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: The legendary founder of Clan Mackenzie, the Irish exile Colin Fitzgerald, allegedly took refuge at the court of Alexander III. His exploits in preserving the Scottish monarchy earned him the lands of Kintail and lasting royal favour. West's Scottish masterpiece was commissioned by Lord Seaforth, the head of Clan Mackenzie, as a spectacular piece of dynastic propaganda and part of his campaign to restore the family fortunes compromised by the failed 1715 Jacobite Rising.
