1888, Paul Gauguin, The Vision of the Sermon -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: Gauguin shows here the local women of Pont-Aven, Brittany, in their traditional costume. In the top right-hand corner, two wrestling figures evoke the biblical story of Jacob and the Angel, symbolising the struggle between the flesh and the spirit. A sermon on this theme is being delivered by a priest who has Gauguin's facial features. For this ground-breaking work Gauguin employed his new 'synthetist' style, characterised by bold colours, strong outlines and flattened perspective, inspired by stained glass and Japanese woodcuts.
