1475 (ca.), Andrea del Verrocchio or workshop, The Virgin Adoring the Christ Child ("The Ruskin Madonna") -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)

From the museum label: The composition is remarkable for its grandiose backdrop of classical architecture. The ruined building probably represents the Roman Temple of Peace, which according to legend collapsed at the moment of Christ's birth. Although long ascribed to Verrocchio's workshop, recent technical examination suggests that it may be by the master himself. It was among the prized possessions of the nineteenth-century critic and artist John Ruskin.
