1923, Pierre Bonnard, View of the River, Vernon -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: This shows a view not far from Bonnard's home at Vernonnet on the River Seine. The composition has a strongly decorative aspect to it. The river is indicated by a patch of pinkish-blue, visible through the luxurious greenery, which gives the scene a tropical feel. On the right are three figures, almost absorbed by the undergrowth. Towards the centre a fallen tree or branch is indicated by a slashed diagonal line which serves to unite foreground and distance.
