1887, Paul Gauguin, Martinique Landscape -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: This is a view from the Morne d'Orange, Martinique, looking across the bay towards the volcanic Mont Pelée. Gauguin has created the illusion of a tropical landscape untainted by civilisation, deliberately obscuring the distant town of Saint Pierre from sight. The warm palette and parallel brushstrokes show the influence of Cézanne, while the flattened perspective and discrete patches of colour create a tapestry-like effect.
