1507 (ca.), Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio), The Holy Family with a Palm Tree -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: Joseph is accorded unusual prominence as he offers the infant Jesus a handful of flowers. The palm tree, flowers, paling fence and what may be a sealed fountain or well-head derive from imagery in the Old Testament Song of Solomon, and are associated with devotions to the Virgin Mary. This picture was painted in Florence, where the circular (tondo) format was especially popular, and Raphael arranged his figures so as to emphasise this shape.
