1600 (ca.), El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos), The Savior of the World (detail) -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: The gaunt figure of Christ is shown with his right hand raised in blessing and his left hand resting on the crystalline orb of the world. The direct, frontal presentation of Christ recalls the Byzantine tradition of El Greco's native Crete. The painting may originally have formed part of a series of Christ and the twelve Apostles, known in Spain as apostolados, which were hung in monastic refectories.
