1647, Rembrandt van Rijn, A Woman in Bed (Sarah Awaiting Tobias) -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: This painting appears to be a portrait. However, the intimate setting, in bed, would be inappropriate for any respectable female sitter. Once thought to portray Rembrandt's mistress, Hendrickje Stoffels, it is more likely that the model was Geertje Dircx who lived with him from about 1643-49. Rather than sitting for her portrait, she posed as Sarah, the biblical figure who is watching from her marriage bed whilst her bridegroom Tobias chases away the Devil (Tobit 7, 1-4).
