1864 (ca.), Claude Monet, A Seascape, Shipping by Moonlight -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)

From the museum label: This dramatic view of a harbour at night is unique among Monet's work of the 1860s. It is thought to depict the sea off Le Havre, a major port on the Normandy coast. On the left of the scene, the rigging of a large sailing ship and the funnels of a small steamer are silhouetted against the silvery moonlight. Monet's unusual technique, using both palette knife and brush, reflects the influence of Gustave Courbet.
