1890, William McTaggart, The Storm -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)

From the museum label: At first glance this appears simply to be an atmospheric depiction of an encroaching storm. On closer examination, figures can be seen among the frenetic brushstrokes that capture the turbulent conditions. The residents of Carradale Bay in Kintyre, where McTaggart frequently painted during the summer months, appear completely immersed in their environment. Recognised as one of the finest examples of McTaggart's mature style, this painting was gifted to the nation by Louise Whitfield Carnegie (1857-1946) the widow of industrialist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919).
