1584 (ca.), Paolo Veronese, Venus, Cupid and Mars -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)

From the museum label: Venus comforts her son Cupid, who has been startled by a lively spaniel. She is balanced awkwardly on Mars's lap, and since he does not feature in Veronese's preparatory drawing for the picture (British Museum), he may have been a late addition. The tonal imbalance of the painting is due to a technical peculiarity, the figures of Venus and Cupid alone having been prepared with a thick white ground to give luminosity to their flesh.
