1508 (ca.), Raphael (Raffaelo Sanzio), The Bridgewater Madonna -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: Painted shortly before Raphael left Florence permanently for Rome, the harmonious balance of this composition belies its complexity. Christ's intense gaze and twisting body create a sense of unease that is neutralised by his mother's tender expression and protective embrace. Technical examination has revealed that Raphael initially set the figures against a landscape, then reduced this to a view through an arched window, and finally painted it out altogether.
