1874, Camille Pissarro, Kitchen Gardens at L'Hermitage, Pontoise -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)
From the museum label: Gardens like this, where vegetables were grown to sell at market, were common around the town of Pontoise, north-west of Paris. Pissarro was living in the hamlet of I'Hermitage when he made this painting in 1874. In the same year he sent works to the first Impressionist exhibition. Though this painting was not included in the show, the warm sunlight, bright colouring and broken brushwork became characteristics of this new artistic style.
