1923 (ca.), Beatrice Huntington, A Muleteer from Andalucia -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)

From the museum label: Huntington painted this striking picture of a Spanish mule herder during one of her most experimental periods as an artist. After studying in Paris and Munich and working in London, she returned to Scotland following the First World War. During the 1920s her work became more stylised and her colours more vibrant. Here, she has hewn the muleteer's face with dark blue shadows. The plain background and simple blocks of colour created by his hat and sloped shoulders help to accentuate his striking features.
