1895, William McTaggart, The Coming of Saint Columba -- National Gallery of Scotland (Edinburgh)

From the museum label: In this grand landscape McTaggart stages a momentous event in Scottish history. The ship bearing the Irish monk Columba (521-597) approaches the coast of Kintyre, bringing a new era of Christianity and Celtic culture to Scotland. The bright summer light reflects the sense of optimism. McTaggart painted the landscape at Gauldrons Bay, west of Machrihanish. He added the ships and the figure group in the studio, when he also extended the painting along the side and lower edges.
