1865, Édouard Manet, Head of Christ -- Legion of Honor (San Francisco)
From the museum label: This painting appears to be a fragment from a first version of Manet's Jesus Mocked by the Soldiers, which did not survive in complete form. A note on the stretcher by Father Hurel, a close friend of the artist, describes the work as a study that Manet cut from a larger canvas. The second version of the composition (Art Institute of Chicago) was exhibited at the Salon of 1865 and was scorned by critics.
