1882, Henri Fantin-Latour, Flowers in a Vase -- Legion of Honor (San Francisco)

From the museum label: This understated yet meticulously handled arrangement of tea roses and nigellas demonstrates the bewitching naturalism that made Henri Fantin-Latour one of the most successful still-life painters of the nineteenth century. Fantin-Latour likely rendered this bouquet in Normandy at the family home of his wife, the artist Victoria Dubourg. The couple retreated from Paris to this property during the summer months and sourced freshly cut blooms from the garden to paint. Fantin-Latour's paintings found a ready market, especially in flower-obsessed Victorian England. According to a catalogue of his work published by Dubourg after her husband's death, Fantin-Latour produced nine still lifes featuring roses in the year 1882 alone.
