1889 (ca.), Georges Seurat, Eiffel Tower -- Legion of Honor (San Francisco)

From the museum label: A pioneer of the so-called Neo-Impressionist technique, Seurat sought to give structure and scientific accuracy to Impressionist painting by laboriously applying small dots of color in complementary juxtapositions. When painted side by side, these dots were intended to "vibrate," creating an effect of great color intensity. Here his subject is the Eiffel Tower, the great symbol of industrial modernity that was built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The tower was unfinished when Seurat produced this painting, as is evidenced by its dissolution into the sky.
