1673 (ca.), Jan Steen, The Marriage of Tobias and Sarah (The Marriage Contract) -- Legion of Honor (San Francisco)
From the museum label: This work depicts the Apocryphal Old Testament story of Sarah and Tobias (Tobit 3:7-17), recast as a scene set in the seventeenth century. Sarah had been married seven times previously; all seven husbands died on their wedding nights. Here, Tobias marries her under the protection of his guardian angel, Raphael, who is depicted between the young lovers, under a wreath of sunflowers. Raphael taught Tobias how to thwart the evil spirit that jealously guarded Sarah's chastity.
