1955, Elmer Bischoff, Orange Sweater -- San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
From the museum label: In his approach to figurative painting, Bischoff sought to melt away, as he put it, "the tangible facts of things seen... and deal directly with the matter of feeling." Here the vibrant sweaters, soft window light, and interior structure created using gestural marks and earthy tones make for a romantic rendering of the library. Bischoff was a treasured mentor to several students who attended the California School of Fine Arts (later the San Francisco Art Institute) during the 1950s, including Brown, Carlos Villa, and Manuel Neri. Brown, especially, credited Bischoff with teaching her to find beauty and inspiration in everyday life.
