1910, Max Pechstein, Nelly -- San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
From the museum label: Both the artist who made this portrait and the woman it depicts were active members of Berlin's growing visual and performing arts community in 1910. Pechstein was among the first German painters to encounter Fauvism in Paris, where in 1907 he saw works by Henri Matisse, André Derain, and others. He began experimenting with loose brushwork, incorporating broad swaths of bright colors into his paintings. Although not much is known about her identity, Nelly was a cabaret performer who regularly posed for Pechstein and other artists in his circle. Here she appears dressed for the stage in fashionable red evening wear and dangling earrings.
