1931, Frida Kahlo, Frieda and Diego Rivera (detail) -- San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

From the museum label:

This painting reads: "Here you see us, me, Frieda Kahlo, with my beloved husband, Diego Rivera. I painted these portraits in the beautiful city of San Francisco, California, for our friend Mr. Albert Bender, and it was in the month of April of the year 1931."

Recently married, in late 1930 Kahlo and Rivera moved to San Francisco where Rivera fulfilled two public mural commissions. Kahlo was beginning her artistic career, while Rivera was already an internationally celebrated artist. Often referred to in the press as "Rivera's wife," Kahlo, perhaps critically referencing this dynamic, portrays Rivera as the larger-than-life artist, brushes and palette in hand. Nonetheless, her bright clothes and the portrait's flattened style, subtly assert Kahlo's perspective as an artist and intellectual.
