1912, Franz Marc, Steiniger Weg (Stony Path) -- San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
From the museum label: This painting depicts a jagged pathway through the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. Marc's planes of harmonic hues draw the eye up toward a high horizon line and bright orange sun. The artist began and publicly exhibited the painting in 1911, under the title Landscape. However, he reworked it the following year after a visit to Paris, where he encountered new approaches to painting such as the use of prismatic colors and abstract geometric forms.
