1937, Emilio Pettoruti, Coparmonica (Harmonious Glass) -- San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
From the museum label: Pettoruti spent many years in Italy, where he explored cubist and futurist conceptions of objects in space. In Harmonious Glass he abstracts the structure of a goblet, depicting the top, bottom, and sides from several angles simultaneously. The artist emphasized the analysis of form over color. He explained, "Color is never fundamental in what I paint. I am much more concerned with the problems of form, and my paintings always depend on a meticulous labor of drawing and construction."
