1944, Pablo Picasso, Nature morte "la cafetière" (Still Life "The Coffee Pot") -- San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
From the museum label: This canvas is one of at least ten still lifes featuring the same tall coffee pot and cup with an irregularly shaped, footed saucer, all painted by Picasso within the span of a week in April 1944. At this especially grim moment during World War II, Picasso worked with what was close at hand. Although the objects in the composition are inanimate and are painted in a somber grisaille, many viewers have commented on their strong sexual symbolism and almost human energy.
