1778, Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho, Salvator Mundi (The Savior of the World) -- Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (Lisbon)
From the museum label: This small canvas was the study for the large panel that Pedro Alexandrino painted at Lisbon Cathedral and which afforded him the fame that was needed to become the most sought after painter for the churches that were being built, or rebuilt, in Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The painting has an expressiveness in its execution that the painter's final works rarely show in their more conventional finishing. One can note the artist's skill in the composition of groups of figures, but there is little sign of the use of the open colours and the softening of the shadows with which he brought a new taste and style to Portuguese painting.
