1550, Master of 1549, The Last Judgment -- Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (Lisbon)

From the museum label: This is the most complex of the sixteenth century Portuguese paintings representing the Last Judgement. The souls are taken out of limbo, on the right, and, in the presence of St. Michael, angels and demons record in their ledgers the spiritual accounting of their actions. The condemned souls are thrown into Hell and the chosen ones climb the stairway to Heaven, after passing through a portico decorated with images of the virtues, with a separation being made between those who obtain salvation through martyrdom and those who achieve it through good deeds. They are joined together again in the upper register, in the celestial court presided over by Christ, with the Virgin and female saints on one side and St. John the Baptist and the righteous of the Old Testament on the other.
