1952, José Tengarrinha, Cape Sagres -- Museu de Lagos (Lagos, Portugal)

On a late summer's day in 1952, two friends, Samora Barros (who lived in Albufeira) and José Mendes Tengarrinha (who lived in Portimão), decided to go to Cape Sagres and paint what they saw from the same perspective. A young woman, Margarida Tengarrinha, went with them. What they produced can only be described as raw, realistic visions of a landscape they loved. Margarida would come to inherit and perpetuate this raw observation of reality throughout her artistic life. Her painting "Old Carob tree" is reminiscent of drawings of the same subject matter done by her father's friend.
